What is Covid-19?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illness in humans or animals. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed as the causative agent of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a global pandemic on 11 March 2020 after the virus had spread to all continents
How is Covid-19 spread?
The virus spreads from person to person through respiratory droplets and virus particles being released into the air by an infected person therefore every single person can help our country control the spread by maintaining physical distance, mask-wearing and practicing good hand hygiene.
What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and fatigue. Other less common symptoms include loss of taste and smell, conjunctivitis, muscle or joint pains, headaches, diarrhoea, and chills. Shortness of breath, temperature above 38°C, loss of speech or movement and chest pain is more severe symptoms that require urgent medical care.
Why be tested?
Testing saves lives. A positive detection at an early stage of infection allows for immediate medical intervention likely reducing the disease severity. Early diagnosis also enables individuals to isolate themselves, reducing the chances of spreading the virus to family, co-workers, and communities.
